Config - Use MidiConfig'er to set up your midi devices
The SETUP program will start MidiConfig'er:
(or get to it by PianoCheater's "green check" button.)
Name and order your midi devices:
Windows only has a one line cryptic description per midi device...:(
Give them names.
Keep it short and sweet. I named my keyboards tweaker and rockin88.
A digital piano has both a midiIn(keyboard controller) -and-
midiOut(sound synthesizer).
So give em the same name if they're the same device.
Scoot the devices into the order you wish to use them.
Click on a line then the up/down arrows.
Turn the "junky" devices off and scoot em to the end.
Click in the "on?" column and set it to "off"
(That Microsoft synth uses laaaame 22KHz samples, but might be all ya got)
If you ever install/uninstall midi devices,
click the little refresh toolbar button to get the new set of them.
For now, we just leave all the devices' Type=general_midi and CCMap=main.
What's a DeviceType?
Although MIDI is a =standard= across keyboards, they still all have
different sets of sounds and control panel sliders/buttons/pedals/etc.
A DeviceType lists off ALL the sounds and controls available on a device.
You'll need to read up in the MidiConfig'er reference docs for details.
This is a tutorial and we SKIP all that for now :)
Except if you have a Creative Soundblaster Live, Audigy or X-Fi card:
click the little lightning bolt button and download "soundfont".
(And be patient - 35 megs - this used to be a lot harder:)
Hit SAVE !!
________________________________________________________________________________
Click the little keyboard toolbar button to get to...
Pressing a note on the midi keyboard will make PianoCheater "do" stuff like:
adjust tempo, pick next song, hop to next section of the song, save, etc.
Highest note on the piano behaves like a shift key
and will pop a window listing the commands:
When that note is released, help screen closes and notes play as usual.
Only the key on the FIRST device in the list does this.
If your keyboard has less than 88 keys,
set the "EditKey" field to the highest key you've got.
(so 7g for 76 notes, 7c for 5 octaves, etc...)
Hit SAVE !! and exit back to MidiConfig'er main window
________________________________________________________________________________
Can you hear me now??? good...
Input test:
Pick an input device and click the "controls" toolbar button that says
"Edit input DeviceType's control panel names" to see...
This screen will display any midi message coming from that keyboard.
Hit some keys, tweak some controls, stomp some pedals.
It may look a little cryptic, but as long as you see STUFF coming in...
Never mind the rest of the stuff on there.
Ok, exit back to MidiConfig'er main window - no need to save this time.
Output test:
Ummm, we'll test output devices in a bit.
(but do check that the windows volume control panel ain't muted, etc.)

Now we try out a piano practice session:)
